Cardiff Half Marathon

Run Green: Your Guide to Sustainable Travel for the Cardiff Half Marathon

We all love the thrill of race day, but have you ever thought about the environmental impact of our journey to the starting line? Recent studies show that travel to events like the Cardiff Half Marathon is a major contributor to carbon emissions. As students from Cardiff University’s Business School, we’re conducting a research project and campaign to tackle this issue. So, what can we do about it? Let’s dive into some key insights and easy steps:

Why sustainable travel matters

Large events bring in thousands of participants, and with them, a lot of travel. Many of these trips involve cars, which significantly increase greenhouse gas emissions. By choosing more sustainable travel options, we can reduce this impact and help preserve the environment we love to run in.

Acknowledge the challenges

We know public transport can be unreliable, costly, and not an option for many attending the event. Recognising these difficulties, we’ve designed our campaign to offer practical, sustainable solutions that consider these challenges while still promoting eco-friendly practices.

What we learned from you

We sent out a survey to understand your travel habits, and here’s what you shared:

Travel Distance: 43.26% of you travel more than 60 miles to get here, while 21.16% are local, traveling less than five miles.
Mode of Transport: Over half (50.6%) of you drive, and 21.35% travel alone.
Travel Options: 51.97% have multiple travel options available, including trains (32.3%) and cars (31.4%).
Decision Factors: Your travel choices are influenced by convenience (35.3%), time (21.2%), and cost (15.9%).
Sustainability: 42.23% consider sustainability moderately important, and 52.44% are open to car sharing.
Carbon Offsetting: 39.91% of you are not familiar with carbon offsetting.

Making a difference together

Based on your feedback, we’re launching a campaign to promote sustainable travel for the Cardiff Half Marathon. Here’s how you can get involved:

  1. Carpool with Fellow Runners: If you’re driving, consider sharing the ride. It’s a great way to reduce emissions and meet new friends.
  2. Explore Public Transport: Check out train and bus options, there is information about these on our website. Many of you already have these as alternatives. They’re often more convenient than you think!
  3. Go Green with Active Travel: If you’re local, why not walk or bike to the event? It’s a great way to warm up.
  4. Learn About Carbon Offsetting: For those traveling long distances, explore carbon offsetting programs. It’s a simple way to balance out your carbon footprint.

Share your sustainable journey

We want to hear from you! Share your travel plans or the steps you’re taking to be more sustainable as you prepare for the Cardiff Half Marathon. Why it matters

Choosing sustainable travel isn’t just about reducing emissions; it’s about setting an example and showing that small changes can make a big impact. By making informed travel choices, you’re not just running a race—you’re running towards a greener future.

Let’s make this year’s Cardiff Half Marathon not only a celebration of our running achievements but also a step forward in our commitment to the environment. Together, we can make a difference!
