Cardiff Half Partners With Language-Learning App Duolingo

As part of the #EinDinas theme celebrating a record number of runners travelling for the Wizz Air Cardiff Half from overseas, we’ve partnered with the popular language-learning app Duolingo UK to bring you some useful phrases in our ancient language.

It’s estimated that just under 500,000 learners are currently learning Welsh on Duolingo, contributing to the Welsh Government’s ambition of having 1,000,000 Welsh speakers by 2050.

When some of the best elite half marathoners in the world take on the iconic 13.1 mile tour of the capital city, you’ll now be well-equipped to cheer them on in the nation’s tongue.

R4W Chief Executive Matt Newman commented: ‘We’re proud to be Welsh at R4W, and believe the language is an asset worth celebrating. Considering and embracing the Welsh Language in all that we do helps us to create events with a unique sense of identity, pride and culture. We’re delighted to have teamed up with Duolingo, and hope those visiting for the Wizz Air Cardiff Half Marathon can pick up a few words over the weekend’.

The team at Duolingo made up a card of phrases that can be used by speakers across the capital on race day:

Over 3,000 runners have opted to have a ‘Cymraeg’ badge printed on the race bib they wear during the race, meaning they welcome encouragement or conversation in Welsh on race weekend. It encourages the natural use of the language between runners, spectators and volunteers.
