New 'flattest, fastest' route announced for Lloyds TSB Cardiff Half Marathon

Release Date: 29/07/2010

A new route has been unveiled, starting and finishing in the iconic Cardiff Bay area.

From the starting line on Lloyd George Avenue, the route takes runners towards the city centre before turning towards Bute Park. The northernmost point reached on the route is Western Avenue, before heading south towards Penarth Marina and ending in the Bay for the big finish.

Simon Lawson, last year’s fastest runner, broke the UK junior half marathon record with a time of 1:05:48. This shows the potential for fast times on our flat course. We hope this new course will see even more record-breaking runs, as many will aim to achieve a personal best.

Rachel Madge, Event Co-ordinator, said:

“This fantastic new route will allow even more runners to take part. Our new route will help put Cardiff firmly on the map as one of the big city races to run in the UK.

"Charities will also benefit as more runners can run to raise money for their favourite good causes. We have listened to runners’ feedback over the years… and now believe we have a world-class course.’

Emphatic approval was also given by Welsh Assembly Government’s Heritage Minister, Alun Ffred Jones, who said:

“It is an excellent example of strategic partnership working in Wales. The Welsh Assembly Government, Barnardo’s Cymru, Cardiff Council and Welsh Athletics are all working together to grow the event into Wales’s biggest road race.

The event is a focal point for healthy and active lifestyles and I look forward to our welcoming runners and their families from across the UK. I’m sure it will prove to be an exciting and very enjoyable weekend.”

Over 10,000 runners have already signed up this year, so register now as places ran out weeks ahead of the event last year.
