Protect forests the Size of Wales at 2019 Cardiff Half

Cardiff University/Cardiff Half Marathon runners can join together to help save tropical forests the Size of Wales when they sign-up for the nation’s largest mass-participation event.

As part of the Cardiff Half’s Green Action Plan pledge to make the race as sustainable as possible, entrants can now donate to Size of Wales, a charity helping to reduce global deforestation as part of Wales’ response to combat the climate change crisis.

Runners can mitigate their own carbon footprint with a donation of £3, £5 or £10 when they sign up, or by heading over to https://myevents.active.com and selecting merchandise options if their place on the start line has already been booked.

The Cardiff based charity has already helped protect 4 million hectares of forest and its indigenous people across South America, Africa and Asia since its inception back in 2013. And with the help of 25,000 Cardiff Half runners, Size of Wales is determined to keep on safeguarding the world’s precious rain forests.

Run 4 Wales Chief Executive Matt Newman said: “The Cardiff University/Cardiff Half Marathon is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and becoming the greenest race it can be. Runners recycle thousands of bottles and banana skins each year but this year we are aiming to make a global impact alongside Size of Wales to ensure the world’s forests remain intact.

“Runners lucky enough to have secured their spot can help Size of Wales protect another 2 million hectares of forest by adding a small donation at the Active checkout.”

Size of Wales Director Elspeth Jones said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Cardiff University/ Cardiff Half Marathon. Donations from Cardiff Half runners will support our tropical forest restoration and protection projects, helping to mitigate the carbon footprint of the event.

“The protection of these precious landscapes is a vital part of the climate change solution and we’re really proud that Cardiff Half runners will be supporting this important work.”

Last year the Cardiff Half Marathon teamed up with Recycle for Wales to encourage everyone taking part to Run, Refuel, Recycle. The partnership helped set new standards of sustainability at mass-participation events as a record 96 percent of waste thrown away was recycled.

This year runners can help Size of Wales support nine forest conservation projects. There are two in South America (in Guyana and Peru), five in Africa (Congo Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Zimbabwe and two in Kenya) and a new project in Borneo in South East Asia.

The Welsh charity also support flagship tree planting project in Uganda. Additionally, their education programme offers free workshops to schools across Wales and inspires pupils to take positive action for tropical forests.
