The race icon

It is a great privilege to have my design chosen to represent the Cardiff Half Marathon and I am really proud that my icon now represents this flagship race!
Kate Gribble
In 2010, the Lloyds TSB Cardiff Half Marathon launched a public competition to design a new icon for the race logo.
22 year old Kate Gribble, a design student at the University of Glamorgan in Cardiff, produced the winning design. Kate is graduating from a four year Graphic Communications course and hopes to become a professional graphic designer.
Explaining how she developed her idea, Kate says:
“To create the icon I took into consideration the Welsh setting for this major fundraising event. Using the tail of a dragon, I created the effect of a finishing line with a drawing of a runner crossing the finish.
To add an extra Welsh feel I added green and red, the national colours of Wales.”
Rachel Madge, Event Manager for the Lloyds TSB Cardiff Half Marathon, launching the icon said:
“This is an exciting and dynamic icon that reflects the stature and vitality of the event. Kate’s design will be used across all event promotion throughout Wales and internationally, including websites, banners, outdoor advertising, brochures and adverts.”
