Following the announcement earlier this month that plans have been put in place to bring a marathon to Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, the Great Run Company, in conjunction with Run4Wales (organisers of the Cardiff Half Marathon), have agreed to work alongside Cardiff Council and the Vale of Glamorgan Council with the aim of staging the event in 2018.
Next year there will be a ‘Stepping Stone’ event in Cardiff Bay on 2 April. This will give runners, whether beginners or experienced athletes, the chance to properly plan their training.
The Great Run Company announced two marathons earlier this year in Stirling and Birmingham. An event in South Wales would become the third in the Great Run British Marathon Series.
Run4Wales CEO Matt Newman said: “The initial reaction after announcing we wanted to bring a marathon back to the Welsh capital region was amazing. It is obvious there is a huge desire from the running community within Wales and beyond for a quality marathon event.
“Having fully explored all the possibilities with Cardiff Council and Vale of Glamorgan Council regarding the best possible route we have decided not to rush things. There are a number of opportunities that need to be further explored in order to deliver an iconic route for the runners to enjoy.
“Rather than try to stage the event in 2017, we feel it is more important to provide the perfect course for runners of all abilities. In the meantime, there will be an event in April 2017 that will give everyone a flavour of what we want to deliver a year later.
“This will include training events at venues around the course, information for runners and a general build up to what we hope can become a huge day in the Welsh sporting calendar.”
The full course will be confirmed soon, although it will take in some of these amazing sights:
Cardiff Bay Barrage
Cosmeston Country Park & Lakes
